The new edition of Aquaculture UK, to be held May 3-5 in Aviemore, Scotland, is expecting record attendance, the organizers said. For three days, the city will once again be the focus of attention for the international aquaculture community after four years of inactivity caused by the covid pandemic. Normally, the meeting is held every two years.

The international exhibition, which will be opened by Scotland’s Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and Islands, Mairi Gougeon, brings together the entire industry, from suppliers, feed manufacturing companies, technology innovators, large production companies as well as emerging ones, to research institutions and investment platforms.

One of the objectives of the exhibition is to show the world the growing importance of aquaculture in Scotland, as well as the technological advances produced since its inception. Industry professionals, who have expressed their desire for a “reunion”, will once again be able to showcase their products, equipment and services for the entire supply chain.

Both the exhibition and the Aquaculture UK conference are free of charge and will take place at the Macdonald Resort in Aviemore. Opening times for the exhibition are Tuesday, May 3, from 12 noon to 5pm; Wednesday, May 4, from 9am to 5pm; and Thursday, May 5, from 9am to 3pm.

Conferences on new developments

Indeed, the members of the organization have prepared for its attendees an interesting program of lectures on new developments achieved since the last edition of Aquaculture UK, held in 2018.

The first of these will be given by Gougeon herself, who will offer the Scottish Government’s perspective on the importance of sustainable aquaculture to the communities and economy of Scotland, its forthcoming vision for Aquaculture and other initiatives, including a more efficient and transparent approach to regulation and marine stewardship.

The program will also include presentations from Ally Dingwall of the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC); Professor Simon MacKenzie, head of the Stirling Institute of Aquaculture; and Sarah Riddle of the Sustainable Aquaculture Innovation Centre (SAIC), who is presenting a Funding Surgery featuring some of the key organizations funding sustainable projects in aquaculture.

“The conference tent will also host talks from Dutch group DSM and Veramaris, the pioneering seaweed oil producer, which will be focused on feed, reporting on how alternative ingredients can contribute to sustainable aquaculture growth.

The 14 awards presented by the exhibition to projects, companies or individuals that have made an outstanding contribution to global aquaculture will be presented at a gala dinner on May 4.

Long list of participating companies

As for the companies that have confirmed their presence at this 2022 edition of Aquaculture UK, among them will be Gael Force, one of the most relevant companies in the business and which will exhibit the SeaQurePen 500 on its outdoor stand, along with mooring components and nets. Also in the outdoor area will be Fluggaboats, which will showcase one of its workboats that reduce diesel or gasoline emissions at its facilities.

Shetland-based engineering and manufacturing specialist Ocean Kinetics will bring to Aquaculture UK samples of its innovations, such as the Thermolicer treatment system and technology to electrify fish farm barges.

The exhibition will also have a strong European presence, including a Danish pavilion, where Danish innovators with long experience in the aquaculture sector will be on display.

A bit of history

It’s good to remember that, in February 2020, Diversified Communications UK announced the acquisition of Aquaculture UK, the UK’s leading trade show dedicated to the growing aquaculture sector.

The last edition of the biennial show had more than 2,400 visitors and 190 exhibitors.  The next edition, to be held May 19-21, 2020, expects to attract more than 3,000 attendees and 200 exhibitors. But then came the global pandemic.
