Fish feed producer Aller Aqua has reached an environmental milestone and industry first.

Bureau Veritas has verified the CO2-labelling of fish feed at Aller Aqua’s European factories. This means customers can be offered a full carbon footprint declaration on each type of feed.

“It is a huge milestone for us to be the first company to be able to label our entire product portfolio by the recognised PEFCR (Product Environment Footprint Category Rules) principles Feed for food-producing animals,” said Aller Aqua.

The verification is a big step towards create full transparency for customers and reducing CO2-emissions. The company has already taken other measures such as replacing South American soya with regionally produced soya in its European factories.

Aller Aqua said the carbon footprint declaration will initially include its three European factories, but will soon be extended to other factories.

Aquaculture is already one of the most environmentally friendly ways of producing protein compared to other types of animal farming, noted the company.
