OTAQ reports good profits growth

Marine technology group OTAQ has reported a strong increase in revenue and profits for the year to 31 March 2021.
OTAQ, which makes the SealFence deterrent system as well as a variety of monitoring and analysis technology for the aquaculture sector, has reported an 18.5% increase in revenue, year on year, to £4.05m (2020: £3.42m) and a 17.3% increase in gross profit to £2.3m (2020: £1.96m). EBITDA was up to £542,000 (2020: £451,000).
The company also reports cash balances of £3.1m following the drawdown of a five-year £2m CBILS (Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme) facility.
During 2020/21, OTAQ acquitted the trade and assets of electronic systems design business ROS Technology, added revenue-generating contracts and made a strategic investment in Minnowtech, taking 15% of that company’s equity.
New product development included the live plankton analysis system for detecting algal blooms, in partnership with Blue Lion Labs LLC, and entering the shrimp biomass detection market through the investment in US-based Minnowtech.

Negotiations have been in progress for almost twenty years, but the World Trade Organisation is finally confident that an agreement on limiting fisheries subsidies is in sight, following a day-long meeting in mid-July of ministers and heads of delegation.

“I feel new hope this evening. Because ministers and heads of delegation today demonstrated a strong commitment to moving forward and doing the hard work needed to get these negotiations to the finish line,” said WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as the meeting concluded.“In 20 years of negotiations, this is the closest we have ever come towards reaching an outcome — a high-quality outcome that would contribute to building a sustainable blue economy.”WTO members pledged to conclude the negotiations soon and certainly before the WTO's Ministerial Conference in early December, and to empower their Geneva-based delegations to do so. A new report on gender equality in Norway’s fisheries concludes that if the proportion of women in fisheries is to increase, culture and attitudes must change.

Nofima’s ‘Better gender equality in fisheries’ report found three reasons that individually and collectively result in low participation of female 'fishermen'. Mowi hits back at welfare allegations

Covert video footage of distressed fish published by campaign group Scottish Salmon Watch at four of Mowi’s salmon farms does not represent the state of welfare of Mowi’s fish, according to the company.
Mowi was responding to a complaint raised by Salmon Watch following unauthorised underwater filming at four of Mowi’s farm sites in Scotland – which have not been named – on 16 and 17 July.
The images showed individual salmon heavily infested with lice and also dead salmon and lumpfish. Salmon Watch founder and anti-fish farming activist Don Staniford has filed a formal complaint under the Animal Health & Welfare (Scotland) Act 2006 to Police Scotland’s Wildlife Crime Unit, Marine Scotland and the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA).
Salmon Watch has also called on supermarkets to suspend the supply of salmon from the farms concerned.
Don Staniford said: “The Scottish Government should immediately close down Mowi’s disease-ridden farms and supermarkets should stop selling RSPCA Assured Scottish salmon. The RSPCA’s stamp of approval is now synonymous with welfare abuse. Shame on RSPCA Assured for endorsing lice infestation, mass mortalities, infectious diseases and unnecessary suffering.”
In a statement responding to the allegations, Mowi said: “As is the case with all types of farming, there will unfortunately be times when individual animals are in distress, and these isolated examples can be understandably concerning to the public as well as the farmer. Farmers and veterinarians will do whatever they can to treat animals under their care, or, when circumstances require it, may have to choose to humanely euthanise the animal.”
Mowi pointed out that similar allegations filed in March of this year were investigated by RSPCA Assured, which audits all Mowi’s farms in Scotland. The agency found no evidence to support claims of abuse and <a href=
